How to Start Your Own Blog: Intro

Do you want to start your own blog, but think there are too many “technical” steps that you don’t know where to begin? You’re in good company. I was in that exact spot when I started Petite Modern Life in 2014 except I thought I knew what I was doing and quickly made a lot of mistakes and got overwhelmed!

I really wished there was a straight forward, down to earth, how to start a blog for dummies, with steps regarding the technical things along with some encouragement that I was on the right track. Instead, I stumbled through pretty much each step with some real frustration and probably money poorly spent. Don’t get me wrong, it was still fun when everything was going right, but when technical things go wrong it’s SO FRUSTRATING.

Now that I’ve had a few years of dabbling in the blog world with some neat success, I really feel like I can lend a hand to those wishing to embark on the blogging adventure.

Disclaimer: I’m not a tech wizard. I don’t have a technical degree. I don’t claim to be a master of code. But I’m quite resourceful and a good notetaker and vow to use my knowledge to get you and your blog going the right direction!

What We’ll Cover in this Series

Why start your own blog?

This is a great question to ask yourself as we begin. What do you wish to share with family? Friends? The World? There are SO MANY THINGS to write about! Food, DIY, Lifestyle, Fashion, Gardening, Family, Design, etc. Do you have a passion for any of those things? Then you can write about it. For me, this was/is a creative outlet and a challenge to keep my mind working hard. Also, I love creating beautiful things and getting to share them!

This technical, step by step "How to Start Your Own Blog" series provides the knowledge you need to begin a strong and beautiful blog.

Can I make money?

Let’s be honest, this is probably the second (or first) thought when thinking about starting a blog. The answer? Sure! There are quite a few ways to make money blogging through advertisements, affiliates, and working with other brands and other blogs. We’ll talk more in depth on that later on in the series after we discuss the building blocks to get there.

Is blogging fun or overwhelming?

Any endeavor begs this question. Am I going to start on fire and then crash and burn out or actually enjoy the journey? You really need to get yourself in the right mindset with blogging. They saying “comparison is the thief of joy” holds so true in blogging. Fact: There are a ton of blogs out there. So many that you will constantly be stumbling upon “another amazing blog” with similar content as you. But they aren’t you. They don’t have your exact perspective. They may have similar projects and recipes, but that’s how the world functions. We all cycle through similar ideas and inspirations and that’s OK! If making the “in” DIY project inspires you and brings you joy, more power to you!

More keys to enjoying blogging: Set goals, but take breaks- life happens. Challenge yourself in some areas and step back from others- you don’t have to do it all. Don’t go it alone, make blogging friends; learn from them and encourage one another- it’s a great community! Always go back to why you started your blog and reconnect with those reasons.

If you’ve thought over these things and think, ” YES! I want to try this!” Then I hope you continue following this series and enjoy your new blogging adventure!
